Another point is that, a small bathroom can look wonderful with small tiles – 100x100mm tiles, but they can also make the bathroom busy and the many grout lines will tend to draw the walls inwards.  You may also find yourself getting through lots and lots of grout cleaner!  Most people choose a happy medium, a 200x250mm used to be all the rage a few years ago and they are still good to use in bathrooms low in the space department.  innovative bathroom design has revealed that a 250x400mm tile will look good in a confined area with various bathroom furniture, fixtures and fittings to work around.  These relatively large bathroom tiles will allow you the benefit of fewer grout lines to keep clean and free from mildew and lime deposits and they will open out the walls more than smaller size tiles. 

If you do however have the luxury of a large bathroom, then you can really make a feature with with the 60x30mm tiles, they are very  much endeared with many designers in this day and age  and will go some way to  improve your house and make a big splash in the bathroom. 

Big on the market right now, is concrete stamping.  A stamped concrete coating is a 1/4″ overlay of acrylic modified concrete poured over existing concrete, then stampled with a cookie cutter-like template .  The stenicls come in different patterns from flagstone to pavers .  On the plus side, stamped concrete looks fairly real and some companies will customize the coloring of the different templates.  On the negative side, stamped concrete is not very durable and begins chipping and cracking sometime in the second year after installation.  It is not easy to repair and the huet is even more difficult to match without it being too garish .

Most people mix up stamped concrete overlays with hand-trowelled concrete coatings.  At a quick peek or without speciifc information , its not difficult to do.  Trowelled concrete overlays are acrylic modified concrete applied about 1/8″ on on a wood surface .  But the brilliance of these concrete overlays are that they can be trowelled not only on horizontal surfaces, but vertical surfaces as well.  Unlike their less flexible relative , stamped concrete, concrete overlays are stronger easily fixed and temperate to the touch than regular concrete.

A business that specializes in concrete overlays and is attracting a great deal of focus is Centurystone, Inc.  The colors and textures that can be achieved with CenturyStone products far surpass anything in the industry compared to plain   stamped concrete.  CenturyStone touts 99.9% pure white quartz combined with natural mineral oxides to create its realistic look .  In the beginning , stamped concrete looks good but over a period of time it can look lifeless , unless it is resealed regularly . 

Delamination can always be a concern  in both stamped concrete and concrete coatings.  Stamped concrete sticks okay the first year, but many companies insist on a yearly maintenance program to insure the stability of the surface.  CenturyStone does not have to be resealed every year to maintain its bond .   This is due to the high density of CenturyStone’s coating.     

Hotness is a serious  consideration in stamped concrete or concrete overlays, especially in the southeast and southwest Uniited States. there stamped concrete doesn’t come close in competing with concrete overlays in temperature.  Stamped concrete has a propensity to be quite hot, whereas concrete overlays are more temperate . Temperate concrete is at least twofold by CenturyStone concrete coatings.  Number one is  the product itself, because of its ingredients , it is most reflective. Second is hgh low texture that is attained by trowelling.

Trowelling also lends itselfto a custom finish every time.  Concrete coatings can be trowelled harder or softer for varying   textures which also alllows for the stain to aborb variably into the the trowelled mix .  Stampled concrete with its predictable template is not a bad look if you like monochomatic .  But for an realistic edge , concrete coatings is the best choice.

So, as you are putting the icing on the cake of your outdoor design, remember your flooring …concrete stamping or concrete overlays!

CHIFFON – Chiffon is a fabric made from silk or polyester .  It tends to be sheer, sometimes it has a slight shimmer and is made up of a very simple weave. When held up to the light, chiffon resembles woven netting.  This very smooth textile} is generally used in evening gowns, informal union dresses and prom dresses, since it drapes well and can add a flowing look to mother of the bride gowns and formal dresses. It is also very well know for being quite difficult to work with since it has a slippery nature when sewing .  Most fabric stores stock and sell several forms of chiffon in a lot of colors .  It can also come in different weights like 8mm or 12mm.  The higher the weight the better and more expensive.  Silk chiffon is the most prized, since it has a rich shimmer .  Silk chiffon is also surprisingly sturdy for its weight.  Because silk chiffon is made from a natural fiber, it tends to be more expensive than synthetics, and it also needs to be cleaned with care by a professional .  Polyester chiffon is easier to care for and will not shrink or stretch out as much with varying tempatures – when on a hanger.  Polyester materials are most commonly used to make chiffon, since most synthetics take dye well, are relatively cheap to make, and they tend to be stout. However, the fabric is still frail enough that it should be hand water-washed with cold water only, and never run through a washing machine. Synthetics are also just as challenging to work with as silk, since they are also slippery.

GEORGETTE – Georgette fabric is a textile normally produced from silk, although polyester fibers are sometimes used also .  The interesting point that makes georgette fabric distinctive is the crinkly crepe-light texture, which feels slightly rough and dull, but gives the fabric a lively, flowing look. If you are wanting a slightly heavier fabric than chiffon but still want the flowing nature of chiffon then gerogette is probably your best choice.  Many retailers carry georgette fabric in a variety of colors and prints for various projects.  Some department stores also carry women’s clothing and curtains made from georgette.  The threads used in georgette fabric are highly twisted, which causes them to crinkle as they relax. The weave of georgette tends to be rather tight, but the overall appearance is slightly sheer, since the threads are very thin. Unlike some high quality silks, georgette fabric is also unusually strong, and it holds up well to varied wear. Since silk is highly absorbent, georgette fabric can conveniently be dyed in a wealth of colors, or printed with a pattern.

CREPE – Crepe is a silk, wool, or polyester fabric of a gauzy texture, having a peculiar crisp appearance.  The best weight for this is 40mm which is rather thick.  The wavy appearance of Canton crape results from the peculiar manner in which the weft is prepared, the yarn from two bobbins being melded together in the reverse way. The fabric when woven is smooth and even, having no crape appearance, but when the gum is ultimately extracted by boiling, it suddenly becomes soft, and the weft, losing its twist, gives the fabric the waved structure which constitutes its distinguishing feature. Canton crapes are used, either white or colored, for scarves and shawls, bonnet trimmings, etc.  The crisp and elastic structure of hard crape is not produced either in the whirling or in the weaving, but is due to processes through which the gauze passes after it is woven.  Crinkle crepe, crepe de chine and crepe back satin are variations of crepe.

CHARMEUSE – Charmeuse is not a heavy fabric woven with a light satin weave, wherever the warp threads cross over three or more of the backing (weft) threads. The front side of the fabric has a satin finish.  Whereas the back has a matte finish.   It has a floating appearance which lays on the body very well, especially for prom gowns and other types of social occasion formal wear. The fabric is has a sleek appearance and extremely soft texture.  The fabric does need to be treated gently , since it is very fragile.  In a satin weave, the fabric is woven in such a way that, from the front, only the warp threads show.  A number of weft threads are also missed in weaving, making long, smooth lines of warp threads. As a result, the front of a satin weave textile is glossy and very smooth, while the backing is matte, and somewhat a little rough. The look of satin is highly prized for fine ladies evening apparel dressy garments, since it flows well on the body and catches light in stunning pattern.  Charmeuse is tends to be very silky and comfortable and is known for it’s anti-static nature.  It should feel cool on the skin. However, I don’t think it’s the most breathable of fabrics, and in very warm climates it may tend to feel a bit sticky .

VELVET – Velvet is a type of woven tufted fabric in which the cut threads are very evenly distributed, with a low   dense pile, giving it a distinct feel.  Velvet is a soft pile fabric that has been manufactured for almost 4,000 years in one form or another. Velvet has long been reasoned a high end fabric because it requires more thread to manufacture than other fabrics, as well as multiple steps. Velvet can be made from any type of thread, although traditionally, velvet was made with silk thread, making it even more costly.  It tends to be associated with luxury and sophistication, because (traditionally) it was a very rare and expensive material used only by the wealthy for special occasions . It was the favored fabric of high class families and was prized not only because of its appearance but its warmth, making it optimal for European weather.  Velvet is usually woven as a double cloth on a specialized loom. The warp threads pass through two pieces of cloth, rather of just one, and when the fabric is finished, a blade cuts the two pieces of fabric apart along the warp, creating velvet. Each piece of fabric must be taken up on a separate roll as it is cut. The end result is known as a pile fabric since the thread sticks up, resulting in a soft pile.

SATIN – Satin is a weave that normally has a glossy surface and a dull back. There are several main types of satin, which can vary in thickness, flexibility, and weight. Many materials are also backed with satin.  Wool crepe and velvet often have a satin backing or a satin lining, which eliminates having to wear slips or camisoles.  Some of the more popular satin types are duchess satin, satin faconne, slipper satin, and delustered satin. Duchess satin is used mainly in dress fabrics, and is a common choice for silk satin bridal gowns. It is a fairly stiff satin with a heavy weight and is glossy on one side only.  Satin faconne or satin jacquard is a type of satin with patterns woven through it. These could be stripes, paisley, or actually any design. Satin jacquard comes in a variety of weights and qualities, but usually toward being a more flexible fabric than duchess satin.  Slipper satin is often used for shoes. It may be used on dye-to-match shoes for girls going to the prom . It’s also a common choice for slippers. Slipper satin also covers toe shoes worn by ballet dancers .  Delustered satin, also named peau de soie (skin of silk), is a less shiny, lightweight material. Unlike the shine associated with other forms of satin, peau de soie is often described as having a more matte finish . Delustered satin is normally  processed on both sides, making it double-faced. One can also note fine-grained threads in this type of satin.

SHANTUNG – Shantung is a heavy fabric that is often made with either silk fibers or some form of synthetic fibers that are meant to be substitutes for cotton filaments. Sometimes referred to as spun wild silk, the texture of shantung is somewhat rough but not unpleasant to the touch. Here are some elementary facts about shantung fabric, including a few examples of regular uses for the material.  One of the characteristics that give shantung its reputation as a rough fabric is found in the weave of the material. Instead of some sort of intricate weave, shantung employs as very simple plain weave design with a ribbing .  What allows the plain weave to produce the raised or ribbed sections of the fabric is the fact that slubbed yarns are used in the warp of the material.  It is a medium-weight, plain-weave fabric in cotton, silk, rayon or synthetics, characterized by a ribbing, resulting from slubbed yarns used in the warp or filling focal point. Understandably you can see where this would be used for silk wedding dresses, formal ball gowns and some mother of the bride 2 piece suits.  It is quite similar to pongee, however it has a more heavier and rougher surface.  Most of the slubs are in the filling direction. It wrinkles abundantly so steaming before each usage is probably going to be important. Underlining helps to prevent this as well as slipping at the seams. Do not fit too tightly, if long wear is likely. This comes in various weights, colors and also an array of prints.  Douppioni is the pretty much the same as shantung but simply comes from a different part of the world and depending on the quality will sometimes still feel a bit lighter than shantung.

TAFFETA – Taffeta is a type of fabric which was typically made from silk, but today can be made from many different fibers, including artificial fibers like nylon, and engineered fibers such as rayon. There are a number of uses for taffeta, ranging from lining windbreakers to making wedding gowns, and many people associate this fabric with luxury and high end garments. Many sewing stores that carry taffeta, and it can also be easily purchased directly from most fabric suppliers .  This fabric usually has a very tight weave, and the weave is plain yet the fabric is also very soft and smooth feeling , and it has a famously lustrous and glimmery appearance. Taffeta is famous for being very stiff and crisp, generating rustling sounds when people move in it. Yarn-dyed fabric tends to be especially stiff, while piece-dyed garments are softer and more flexible.   Silk taffeta, which is the most expensive version of the fabric , is used in specialty and fashion designer garments such as formal prom gowns, homecoming dresses and ball gowns. Taffeta made from other fibers are utilized for a a lot of different types of garments, and they are particularly popular as linings, because the taffeta can provide insulation while helping the garment keep its form . This fabric can also be used for piecework and artwork.

JERSEY – Jersey is a knit fabric used predominantly for clothing manufacture. It was originally made of wool, but is now made of wool, cotton, and synthetic fibers.  Usually thinner or lighter-weight than interlock knit with less stretch. It’s appropriate for tops and fuller dresses.  Jersey fabric is a type of knit textile made from cotton or a cotton and synthetic blend. Some common uses for jersey fabric include t-shirts and winter bedding material. The fabric is somewhat flexible & stretchy , making it a popular choice for a form fitting design . Jersey also tends to be soft, making it very comfortable. One of the reasons many people like to wear jersey fabric is the stretch factor. The fabric can stretch up to 25% percent along its grain. Garments made from the material have plenty of give as their wearers move, and also tend to cling to the body, since the fabric contracts as well as expanding. Knit garments and a few types of formal dresses are sometimes made from jersey fabric, taking advantage of the clingy characteristic of the fabric. Jersey fabric is also available in many assortment of colors and patterns to suit all tastes.

ORGANZA – Originally a lightweight silk fabric, organza is a plain weave that is created using nylon, polyester, and silk or a blend of any of the three. The loose weave of the filaments allows the production of organza to result in sections of cloth that are translucent in nature. A slightly looser variation on the weave will result in sheer looking fabric.  When it comes to attire, organza is a staple of formal dresses, bridal gowns and other feminine wardrobe items for women. As a way to create full skirts on evening gowns, nothing beats organza for a graceful fall that produces elegant and pretty lines. Wraps that are overlaid with organza can produce a sophisticated look that will draw many admiring eyes.  organza is used a lot in the creation of wedding dresses that help make the all important wedding day all the more special . Between wedding attire and uptown evening wear fashions, organza has a very stable position in the clothing world. 

FAILLE – Faille is a ribbed fabric with a texture similar to grosgrain ribbon. The fabric drapes well and is not prone to wrinkling. Color tone is stronger, more solid than shantung. Faille offers a supportive fit.  This fabric is mostly worn by women. It has an fantabulous drape, which is why it often appears in wedding gowns.  This fabric is also durable and often quite rugged; it is often very repellent to stains and tearing, for example. When the woven fabric is made with heavier materials, it can sometimes withstand quite intensive and varied uses.
